It is only cheaper to replace if your existing motor has suffered terminal damage in the cases. If the damage is in the top end (rod, piston, jug, head, or electrics), or in the transmission guts (shafts, gears, or clutch pack), it is chepaer to fix it-but only at a reputable shop, so your local Suzuki dealership is likely out of it. If the crankshaft broke, replace the entire motor/transmission assembly, a broken crank will generally ruin anything in proximity to it. Only fix what really is in dire straits. I may not be the right person to say this, but a 14 year old Japanese motorcycle is not worth pouring a vast amount of money into. The Savage is a pretty good bike, however, you may find out it is cheaper to buy a whole, new, 5 speed bike than it is to fix your four speed model. I don't mean to sound harsh,so if I do, my apologies.
Base your decision on what is best for your budget and riding needs. Waynesville Cycle is who you need to get in contact with about the feasibility of fixing your ride. They can be contacted at www.waynesvilecycle.com or 1-800-438-7921 in the USA or 1-704-456-9710 from outside the USA or 1-704-452-5834 by fax. If they can't help, try Banzai Parts (banzai@Ind.com), located in Libertyville Illinois.
Good luck, hope all turns out fine for you and your bike.
